Goal-question-Kanban: Applying Lean Concepts to Coordinate Multi-level Systems Engineering in Large Enterprises
نویسندگان
چکیده
There is good evidence from experience reports and other literature that the lean flow concepts of on-demand, value-based scheduling and limited work-in-progress are highly effective in many instances of software development. The question remains, however, if they are equally applicable to the systems and enterprise engineering found in large or complex system environments. This paper builds on previous conceptual work to describe specific applications of the concepts to support coordination of systems engineering activities within large-scale system acquisition, development and evolution. Using a surrogate environment derived from the complex interactions of IT, embedded systems, and human activities in a large multifacility hospital system, we provide examples of how integrated kanban-like constructs can be created at each systems engineering level from an individual project through the complete capabilities portfolio. © 2013 The Authors. Evaluation of multi-product lean manufacturing systems with setup and erratic demand
The consideration of demand variability in Multi-Product Lean Manufacturing Environment (MPLME) is an innovation in production system engineering. Manufacturing systems that fail to recognise demand variability generate high Work-In-Process (WIP) and low throughput in MPLME. In response to demand variability, organisations allocate large quantities of Production Authorisation Cards (PAC). A lar...
متن کاملStudy on implementation of one-piece lean line design using simulation techniques: A practical approach
This paper discusses the simulation study carried out for proposing one-piece lean line layout with features of Lean Manufacturing. The lean initiatives that can be addressed are, introducing Kanban replenishment sys-tem, better work-in-process, changing the layout, visual management techniques, standardized work for the re-duction of cycle time, number of workers, number of setups. To improve ...
متن کاملModel Development of a Virtual Learning Environment to Enhance Lean Education
Modern day industry is becoming leaner by the day. This demands engineers with an in-depth understanding of lean philosophies. Current methods for teaching lean include hands-on projects and simulation. However, simulation games available in the market lack simplicity, ability to store the results, and modeling power. The goal of this research is to develop a virtual simulation platform which w...
متن کاملTowards Measuring the Project Management Process During Large Scale Software System Implementation Phase
Project management is an important factor to accomplish the decision to implement large-scale software systems (LSS) in a successful manner. The effective project management comes into play to plan, coordinate and control such a complex project. Project management factor has been argued as one of the important Critical Success Factor (CSF), which need to be measured and monitored carefully duri...
متن کاملLean Manufacturing Case Study with Kanban System Implementation
Lean manufacturing has been the buzzword in the area of manufacturing for past few years especially in Japan. The Kanban system is one of the manufacturing strategies for lean production with minimal inventory and reduced costs. However, the Kanban system is not being implemented widely by manufacturing companies in Malaysia. Thus, the objectives of this case study are 1) to determine how does ...
